Dentist administered oral ketamine to pediatric patients without permission

According to the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, Dr. Luc Magne of Prince George, BC has been permanently prohibited from providing any level of sedation in any dental facility in BC and to pay a fine of $40,000 after engaging in professional misconduct in respect to multiple pediatric patients. Dr. Magne made an admission that he administered oral ketamine to pediatric patients on multiple occasions without parental permission. He also allowed a licensed practical nurse to administer oral sedation which is outside of their scope of practice.

Dr. Magne allowed patients to enter a deeper level of sedation than he was authorized to provide based on his level of certification which was only for moderate sedation. An investigation took place after a seven year old child was admitted to a hospital following an incident at Dr. Magne’s dental facility while they were being treated under sedation.

A team of investigators review 15 patient files and found serious concerns surrounding the dentist’s conduct. Before a disciplinary hearing could be conducted, Dr. Magne admitted to professional misconduct and voluntarily entered into a consent order to no longer provide sedation dentistry in BC. In the public interest, the CDSBC has posted this consent order and investigation on its website.
